Vehicle cover
What the vehicle insurance covers

Every vehicle listed on ZimTravelBook must carry comprehensive motor insurance provided by the owner. This is a condition of listing — no car goes live without confirmed insurance cover. The policy covers the vehicle itself for the duration of the rental period.

Understanding exactly what is and isn't covered is important. Read this carefully before you book.

What IS covered
  • Accidental damage to the vehicle
  • Theft of the vehicle
  • Third-party property damage caused by the vehicle
  • Fire damage to the vehicle
  • Third-party liability as required by Zimbabwean law
What is NOT covered
  • Personal injury or accident cover for the renter
  • Personal belongings inside the vehicle
  • Medical expenses for the renter or passengers
  • Damage caused by driving under the influence
  • Damage caused by off-road driving (unless agreed)
  • Mechanical failure or tyre punctures
Important — renters must note: The vehicle insurance covers the car, not you personally. As the renter, you are responsible for your own personal accident and liability cover. If you are travelling from the UK, US, Australia or Canada, check your travel insurance policy before you arrive. See the diaspora section below for more guidance.
Your protection
The vehicle condition checklist

The digital condition checklist is one of ZimTravelBook's most important features. It is completed by both renter and owner together at pickup and again at return. It is your protection against false damage claims — and the owner's protection against unreported damage.

The checklist includes 6 required photos, a tappable car diagram for marking existing damage, an odometer reading, a fuel gauge photo, and digital signatures from both parties. Everything is timestamped and geotagged automatically. Neither party can edit it after both have signed.

1
6 required photos at pickup
Front, rear, left side, right side, dashboard/odometer, and fuel gauge. Takes under 3 minutes. Camera opens directly in your browser — no app needed.
2
Mark any existing damage
Tap the car diagram to mark any existing scratches, dents, or chips. Add a close-up photo for each. If there is no existing damage, tap "No damage" to confirm clean condition.
3
Both parties sign digitally
Renter and owner each sign on their own device. The checklist is locked, timestamped and saved to the booking record automatically.
4
Repeat at return
The same process at return. The system shows a side-by-side comparison of pickup vs return photos. Any new damage is immediately visible and documented.
Always complete the checklist carefully. Rushing through it or skipping photos means you have no evidence if a dispute arises later. Take your time at pickup — it protects you for the entire trip.
In case of accident
What to do if you have an accident

Nobody wants to think about accidents, but knowing exactly what to do in advance means you'll handle it correctly if it happens. Follow these steps in order.

1
Ensure safety first
Check that everyone is safe. Move vehicles off the road if it is safe to do so and there are no injuries. Switch on hazard lights.
🚨 Zimbabwe emergency: 999 or 112
2
Do not admit fault
Do not make any verbal admissions of fault at the scene. This can affect the insurance claim. Simply exchange details and document the incident.
3
Photograph everything
Take photos of all vehicles involved, all damage, the road scene, any road signs, and the positions of all vehicles before they are moved. Get the other driver's registration number, name, and insurance details.
4
Get a police report
A police report is required for any insurance claim in Zimbabwe. Contact the nearest police station or call the Zimbabwe Republic Police on 995. Do not leave the scene without a case number.
📞 Zimbabwe Republic Police: 995
5
Contact the owner through the platform
Notify the car owner immediately through the ZimTravelBook platform inbox. Do not contact them on personal WhatsApp or phone — keep all communication on the platform so there is a record.
6
Contact ZimTravelBook
Message ZimTravelBook through the platform or email [email protected]. We will guide you and the owner through the insurance claim process using the checklist photos and platform evidence.
Mechanical issues
What to do if the car breaks down

All owners on ZimTravelBook are responsible for ensuring their vehicles are roadworthy before a booking. A vehicle that breaks down due to a pre-existing mechanical fault is the owner's responsibility.

If the car breaks down during your trip:

Move the vehicle to a safe location off the road if possible. Switch on hazard lights. Contact the owner immediately through the ZimTravelBook platform inbox — describe what happened and your location. Do not attempt repairs yourself or take the vehicle to a mechanic without the owner's prior agreement through the platform.

If the breakdown is due to a mechanical fault that existed before the trip, ZimTravelBook will work with both parties to resolve the situation. This may include a partial refund for days lost, or arrangements for a replacement vehicle where possible.

Note: Tyre punctures from road hazards are generally not covered by comprehensive insurance and are treated as a routine road expense. Check the spare tyre condition with the owner at pickup as part of the checklist.

Always check the spare tyre at pickup. Confirm with the owner that a functional spare tyre, jack, and wheel spanner are in the vehicle before you drive away. Document this in the checklist notes.
Rental rules
What you must and must not do

These rules apply to every booking on ZimTravelBook. Breaching them may result in loss of insurance cover, deposit forfeiture, and suspension from the platform.

Valid driver's licence requiredZimbabwean licence or home-country licence. Diaspora visitors should carry an International Driving Permit. Minimum age 23. Minimum 2 years licence held.
Full-to-full fuel policyReceive the car with a full tank. Return it full. Fuel shortfall is deducted from your security deposit.
Complete the condition checklist at pickup and returnBoth renter and owner must sign off on the digital checklist. Never skip this step — it is your only protection in a dispute.
Extensions must go through the platformRequest extra days through the platform inbox before your return date. Pay through the platform. Off-platform arrangements void your booking protection.
No smoking in the vehicleReturn the car in the same clean condition received. Excessive cleaning fees may be charged.
No driving under the influenceDriving under the influence of alcohol or substances voids the vehicle insurance and is a criminal offence in Zimbabwe.
No cross-border travel without prior approvalMust be agreed with the owner through the platform before the trip. Owner must confirm insurance covers cross-border use. Never cross a border without confirmed written approval — it voids the insurance.
No sub-letting the vehicleYou may not lend or sub-let the vehicle to another person. Only the named renter may drive the vehicle unless a second driver has been agreed with the owner through the platform.
Platform protection
How ZimTravelBook keeps you safe

Beyond vehicle insurance, ZimTravelBook has built multiple layers of protection into the platform itself.

Verified owners
Every owner is identity-verified before their listing goes live. We confirm their identity, vehicle ownership, and insurance before approving any listing.
💬
Platform messaging only
All renter-owner communication goes through ZimTravelBook's inbox. No personal contact details shared — ever. Every message is recorded and available for dispute resolution.
💳
Secure payments
All payments go through ZimTravelBook's business accounts — never directly between renter and owner. This protects both parties and ensures a complete payment record.
📋
Digital checklist with photos
Timestamped, geotagged, signed by both parties. The most robust protection against false damage claims in the Zimbabwe car hire market.
💰
Security deposit held by platform
Your refundable deposit is held by ZimTravelBook — not paid to the owner. It is only released or deducted after both parties confirm the return.
🤝
Dispute resolution
ZimTravelBook acts as a neutral third party in any dispute. We review checklist evidence, platform messages, and payment records to reach a fair resolution.
For diaspora travellers
Travel insurance guidance for renters from abroad

If you are travelling to Zimbabwe from the UK, US, Australia or Canada, your travel insurance policy may already cover some of what you need — but you must check before you arrive.

What to check with your travel insurer before booking

Contact your travel insurance provider and ask specifically about the following:

  • Does my policy include personal liability cover while driving a hired vehicle abroad?
  • Does my policy cover personal accident — medical expenses if I am injured in a road accident in Zimbabwe?
  • Does my policy cover loss or theft of personal belongings from a rental vehicle?
  • Does my policy cover Zimbabwe specifically — some policies exclude certain African countries.
  • Is there a minimum or maximum engine size limit on covered vehicles?

If your travel insurance does not cover personal liability while driving abroad, consider a standalone short-term motor liability policy. These are available in the UK, US, and Australia for as little as a few pounds/dollars per day.

ZimTravelBook is not an insurance provider and cannot give personal insurance advice. The above is guidance only — always verify with your own insurer.

Cross-border travel
Driving outside Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe shares borders with Zambia, Mozambique, Botswana, South Africa and Namibia. If you are planning to drive across any of these borders in a ZimTravelBook vehicle, you must follow these rules without exception.

Cross-border travel requires:

Written approval from the owner, confirmed through the ZimTravelBook platform before your trip begins. The owner must confirm that their insurance policy covers cross-border use into the specific country you are entering — not all Zimbabwean comprehensive policies include cross-border cover. Additional fees set by the owner will apply.

You will also need a border crossing letter (letter of authority) from the owner confirming you have permission to take the vehicle across the border. This is a standard requirement at Zimbabwean border posts for rental vehicles.

Never cross a border without confirmed written approval on the platform. Crossing without approval voids the vehicle insurance, breaches the rental agreement, and may result in the vehicle being impounded at the border.

Planning a Zambia or South Africa trip? Start the conversation with your owner through the platform at least 3 days before your departure date. The owner needs time to confirm with their insurer and prepare the border letter. Last-minute requests may not be possible.
