Documents you need to drive in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe recognises foreign driver's licences for short-term visitors. However the specific documents you need depend on where your licence was issued. Get these sorted before you fly — not when you land.

Your home-country driver's licence

Your current valid driver's licence from the UK, US, Australia or Canada. Must be valid — not expired. Must be the original, not a photocopy.

An IDP translates your licence into multiple languages. Zimbabwe police and vehicle owners may request one alongside your home-country licence. Obtain from your home country's motoring association before travel — AA (UK), AAA (US), NRMA (AUS).

Zimbabwe operates largely on USD cash. Keep $50–100 in small notes for fuel, tolls, roadside emergencies, and situations where card payment is not available.

Zimbabwean diaspora with a Zimbabwean passport: If you still hold a valid Zimbabwean driver's licence, this is accepted directly. If your Zimbabwean licence has expired, renew it at VID before you leave Zimbabwe — or use your foreign licence with an IDP.

Driving in Zimbabwe — what to expect

If you've been living in the UK, US, Australia or Canada for several years, driving in Zimbabwe will feel different. Roads vary enormously by location — Harare's main roads are well-maintained, but some routes and rural areas require extra care.

Drive on the left
Zimbabwe drives on the left — same as the UK, Australia, and South Africa. US and Canada visitors need to readjust. Take your time on the first day, especially at roundabouts and when turning right across traffic.

Speed limits

Urban areas: 60 km/h. Open roads: 100 km/h. Residential areas: 40 km/h. Speed cameras and traffic police are active, particularly on the Harare–Bulawayo and Harare–Mutare highways. Fines are issued on the spot.

Road conditions

Major highways (A1, A3, A5) are generally in good condition. Secondary roads and routes through rural areas may have potholes, unmarked speed humps, and damaged surfaces. Slow down significantly on unfamiliar routes, especially at night.

Police checkpoints

Police roadblocks are common on all major routes. Slow down and stop when signalled. Have your licence, IDP, and passport ready. You may be asked for the vehicle's insurance disc and licence disc — these are in the vehicle from the owner. Remain calm and polite at all times.

Night driving

Avoid driving after dark where possible, especially on routes outside urban areas. Hazards include unlit pedestrians, cattle on the road, potholes, and vehicles without lights. If you must drive at night, reduce speed significantly and use high beams on open roads.

Fuel availability

Fuel is available at most service stations in cities and towns. On longer routes — particularly between cities — fill up before you leave. Do not rely on fuel being available at every stop on rural routes. ZimTravelBook operates a full-to-full fuel policy on all rentals.

Tollgates

Zimbabwe has tollgates on major routes including the Harare–Bulawayo, Harare–Mutare, and Harare–Beitbridge highways. Tolls are typically $0.50–$2.00 USD per gate. Keep small USD notes accessible in the vehicle.

Vehicle requirements

By law all vehicles in Zimbabwe must carry a valid licence disc, insurance disc, and be roadworthy. Your ZimTravelBook vehicle is verified as roadworthy before listing. In the event of a police check, the owner's documents are in the glovebox.

Do not drink and drive. Zimbabwe's legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08g/100ml — the same as the UK. Penalties include immediate arrest, fines, and licence suspension. Driving under the influence also voids the vehicle's comprehensive insurance.

Fuel — what you need to know

Zimbabwe's fuel situation has improved significantly. Fuel is widely available in urban areas and along major highways. Understanding how it works will save you stress on the road.

Full-to-full policy

You receive the car with a full tank and return it full. The fuel gauge is photographed at pickup and return. Shortfall is deducted from your deposit.

Most service stations accept USD cash. Some accept EcoCash or Visa/Mastercard. Always keep USD notes in the vehicle — do not rely on card payment at every station.

Fill up before long drives

Between cities — fill up before you leave. Fuel stations on rural routes may be unavailable or closed. Never start a long drive with less than half a tank.

Unleaded petrol vs diesel: Know which fuel your ZimTravelBook vehicle takes before you fill up. The vehicle type is on your booking confirmation. Filling a petrol vehicle with diesel (or vice versa) causes serious engine damage and is the renter's financial responsibility.

Harare → Bulawayo

The classic Zimbabwean highway. Well-maintained dual carriageway for most of the route. Passes through Gweru — a good halfway stop for fuel and food. Tollgates at several points.

A5 Highway

Harare → Victoria Falls

A long but stunning drive through the heart of Zimbabwe. Plan an overnight stop in Hwange or Bulawayo. Do not attempt this in a single day. Excellent tarmac on the main route.

Through the scenic Eastern Highlands. Rolling hills, tea estates, and mountain views. The Christmas Pass descent into Mutare is one of Zimbabwe's most beautiful drives.

A3 Highway

Through Hwange National Park — excellent for wildlife sightings from the road. Flat, open terrain. Allow extra time for elephant crossings near Hwange. Fill up before leaving Bulawayo.

Through the Zambezi Valley to Lake Kariba. Spectacular scenery and a dramatic descent into the valley. Some sections of road require care — take your time on the descent.

A1 / Kariba Road

Before any long drive: Confirm the route with locals or check current road conditions. Some secondary roads and scenic detours may be significantly rougher than the main highway. A double cab or SUV is recommended for routes that involve rural or gravel sections.

When you land

Practical tips for your first day back

Coming home after months or years abroad is emotional and sometimes overwhelming. A few practical things to get right from the moment you land will set the tone for the whole trip.

✓ Have your booking confirmation saved and accessible offline on your phone before landing

✓ Carry your driver's licence, IDP, and passport in a bag you can access at handover — not in checked luggage

✓ Buy a local SIM card at the airport (Econet or NetOne) if you need Zimbabwe data — roaming can be expensive

✓ Change some USD into small notes before you exit arrivals — $1, $5, $10 bills for tolls and small purchases

✓ Take your time with the condition checklist — don't rush because you're tired and excited to leave the airport

✓ Ask the owner to walk you through the vehicle before you drive — indicator position, lights, any quirks

✓ Drive slowly on the first day — readjust to Zimbabwean roads before tackling long distances
